How to Make a Vision Board

by ALEXA

Last Friday my neighbor, Hannah, hosted a Vision Board Party. It was one of the best evenings out I’ve had in a long, long time. Close to midnight we said our farewells. I stepped out into the dark, a cold wind against my face and I felt energized! More than that, I felt inspired and renewed. Who would have thought a stack of magazines, a couple of glue sticks, a bottle of red, and the company of some amazing women would have left me feeling that way?

Visualizing the Life You Want

A vision board is a simple visualization tool that activates the universal law of attraction to begin manifesting your dreams into reality. It is simply a visual representation or collage of the things that you want to have, be, or do in your life.

So how do you make a vision board and what goes on it? I hadn’t a clue—and I don’t even know if I went about it the right way. But you know what? My board came out perfect. It just did. That said, I did do some Googling on the topic and came across some life coaches on You-Tube talking about visualizing the life you want and then, as if it were reality, capturing the emotions you would feel in pictures and words. Some use a Vision Board to simply capture their goals for the year. My board emerged as a mixture of both.

Throw a Party

To throw a Vision Board Party, you’ll gather some friends, do some cutting and pasting, enjoy some tasty treats and some great company. Here’s how we went about it:

1. Set a date for your Vision Board Party and send out the invites.

2. A week before the party: You and your friends can give some thought to different facets of life and picture in mind what you WANT them to be. Then, try to put your finger on the EMOTIONS you would feel living that life. Here are the facets of life I focused on:

  • Spiritual
  • Health
  • Marriage
  • Motherhood
  • Friendships
  • Professional

3. Start gathering magazines and type and print sayings you want to paste on your board.

4. For the party, set out: Poster board, scissors and glue sticks. Hannah made an appetizers and wine party out of it.

5. Start clipping … let your mind flow. If you are attracted to an image, there likely is a reason why. Cut it out.

6. Once you’ve got everthing cut out, begin arranging your words and pictures. I found that I instinctively knew where to place each piece. And it all came together beautifully. I think these vision boards are a great lesson in letting go and trusting your heart/gut. It can lead and guide you to some beautiful things.

7. Hang your board somewhere in your home that you spend a lot of time. Look at it everyday to keep fresh in your mind the life that you want … it may just may unfold to be just that!

Here is My Vision Board

And here are some of the things that went through my mind as I created it (clockwise):

  • Life is like a flower. There are many facets of life just as there are many petals that make up a flower. One is no less important than the other. These past years I have focused 99% on my children and have come to realize that my God, my marriage, my health, my professional growth, and my friendships are equally important. So, for me, this year is about balance.
  • I am giving gray a go. This year I am going to let that natural gray begin to shine through. At 42 I have decided to go gray “graysfully.”
  • Motherhood. I love motherhood. But when things get out of balance, I am not always the happiest, most patient mother. Again, balance, balance, balance.
  • A safe haven. I want my home to be a refuge—a peaceful place for family and friends. To me, THAT is worthy of the “Good Houskeeping seal of approval.” 🙂
  • Exercise and meditation. This is a big one for me this year.
  • Priorities. To balance we need to prioritize. Some things CAN wait and they WILL wait.
  • Let Go. Let God. For the past three years, this one has been a biggie. I have repeated this phrase to myself countless times. I tend to want to control every facet of life. Impossible. So this year I want to really take this to heart. Let go. Let God.

Here’s to a great year!

Fabulous board, fabulous party, and fabulous reflections! Thank you so, so much for sharing with us, Lexie. I "finished" my vision board on Sunday to present at a virtual party with some girlfriends, but I'm still adding special touches to it. 🙂 I've used a vision board before, but this is the fullest my vision board has ever been. It's full of al those reaffirming phrases about feelings (it actually has more words than photos) and has photos that make me happy and will keep me headed in the right direction. Mine is propped up on my coffee table. If we have company, I can easily store it. The thing about letting go is that the more we do it, the more things happen that we want, but perhaps not in the way we expected. Vision boards are powerful and comforting as we "take on the world." 😉

xoxo,
Shirley

I haven't stopped by Lexie's Kitchen lately and whenever I do, I'm reminded once again what a special person you are. Your spirit shines through in every post you do, regardless of the content. I'm not big on stuff like this (vision boards) as I always feel too busy. If I'm going to take time out of my day, I want to do something physical, but you've really sparked my interest and I would have LOVED to have been at that party. You painted a picture of women supporting women in such a positive and fun way. I love that! And Alexa, your blog posts are so well done! They are clean, crisp, and brimming with love. You do such a good job. Seriously, you have a top-notch blog here. Your "15 to 30 minutes of movement" is a good one. Movement is the key word to me. Just move. You don't have to do anything difficult, just move. There's no excuse not to. I also love the graysfully one. I have this huge patch of gray hair on the back lower part of my head and every time I put my hair in a pony tail, it bugs me. I see this gray hair falling down the back and when I'm in yoga and bend over, people even mention it sometimes. Hmmm? I was thinking that I really needed to do something about that. Maybe not. =)

Let go. Let God. Love motherhood. I can relate to all that. Beautifully done!

Now, can I borrow your vision board? =) It's perfect! I love it.

Here's to peace, love, and letting go!

Lex, you and I have very similar boards!! I just love yours. I will send you a picture of mine once it is totally done. Just adding a few touches. But one thing that I find wonderful is that I also have "Let Go..Let God" on mine too!! 🙂 I always feel so energized and renewed as well when I get my board done. I am helping my hubby with his now too – he needs a bit of renewal in his life! 🙂
Thanks for sharing your board with all of us!

I LOVE your board Lexie! I'm really glad you shared this with us and I can take some of this inspiration and add to my board.

I bought one of those ribbon photo boards last summer in the hopes of hanging it in front of my treadmill to keep inspiring me to lose weight, keep walking! There are only 3 things on it and it doesn't really motivate me. Now thanks to you I know what else I need to add — things that inspire me in all aspects of my life.

Great post!

I missed the party and haven't even started, but I thank you so, so much for this post Lexie. Showing it visually makes me realize that I need to make a vision board! Pinned this 🙂

Oh Melissa, you lift me up!! Thank you for the touching comment. I am SO like you … I move and really don't like to sit still … but this was a fun thing to do. I am wanting to learn the art of being still … of just being and relaxing. I can't believe we live so close and never see each other. I have a feeling I would have to head up to the mountains to find you this time of year! Actually, I wouldn't mind that. xoLexie

This is a great board. Thanks for the primer (I've never made one at a party–just on my own–gotta give that a try!). And I love your sentiments here. May you achieve every goal on the board! 😀
