Got the Flu?
It was looking like the Great Flu of 2012/13 was going to pass us by. The germaphobe in me had been taking all precautions. After school the boys were marched upstairs for nasal rinses, doses of elderberry syrup were being doled out—as was the ever-constant reminder to “GET YOUR FINGERS OUT OF YOUR NOSE!!”
Despite all efforts, the flu—or whatever bug it was—hit me and the boys this past week. One at a time we dropped like flies.
This morning my husband woke up with it, and that’s when I remembered one more line of defense I wanted to try in hopes of shortening his bout with it.
“Let’s do shots!” I said.
The Wellness Juice Shot
There is a little juice bar I duck into on occasion for their Wellness Shots. I was hooked the first time I threw one back with Jay, the owner. Into the juicer went celery, green apple, ginger and lemon. And the topper? Three dashes of cayenne pepper—yeah baby!
Thankfully I have a husband who’s game for most anything, natural and alternative remedies included. That and when you’re feeling crummy you’ll try just about anything.
He was game.
Three shots later he’s asleep on the couch. Did the shots help? Who knows. Were they fun to do? As good as clean fun gets.

Ingredients
3 stalks CELERY
1 Granny Smith APPLE
1 LEMON, slice off peel but leave on pith (white part)
2-inch piece fresh GINGER ROOT
CAYENNE PEPPER
Instructions
Juice all ingredients using a juicer.
Pour into shot glasses and top each shot with a few dashes of cayenne pepper.
Notes
Organic produce is preferable. If not organic, peel the apple.

Bottoms up, right? 🙂 I love this idea of a juice shot, Lexie. Hope your hubby feels better ASAP!
Lexie, Whether or not this natural remedy helps, I hope it brought comfort to your family towards good health. Thank you for sharing this refreshing recipe!
Oh, I'm not sure if I could handle this! But it sure does look pretty. 🙂
Hallie … exactly … almost knocks you on your bottom, too 🙂

Brooks, thanks for the well wishes. I think we're all on the mend.

Rochelle … yes a little spicy, but it goes away pretty quick 🙂

That sounds like a killer combination. Good luck with clearing the flu out completely.
Lexie, what kind of juicer are you using to make these? I have been drinking bone broth with cayenne as a preventative, but these look great!!
Gloria … Hi there! So being the RRR (reduce reuse recycle) type … I always check out thrift shops before buying new. I got an OLD Braun juicer for $9 at a local antique mall. It's not antique, but older and gently used. 🙂 Typically with special gadgets like this I don't buy new until I know for certain that it's something I will use A LOT. So far I've found myself juicing a couple times a month and so this used one will work for now. I have friends who are really into it and buy the high-end models. I am just not there yet. A while back we had a discussion on my FB page. You could check that out.

Great advice Lexie! I find it admirable that you didn’t direct her to buy a certain product considering it may not be used and therefore wasting money. Way to really look out for others! Will be trying this shot, definitely!
Wish I would have known about this when I was sick! Oh well, I'll try it anyways. Sounds kind of fun, esp. with the cayenne pepper….
For an extra boost to this, add 1/4 t. ground tumeric and a t honey. Helps with the sinuses, and helps fight colds and flu.
I've been using the Homeopathic Flu Nosode for the past few decades with excellent results…no flu for myself or my family. I buy it as soon as it comes out…usually around October sometime.
Got something for someone that is allergic to Ginger? My sister-in-law is allergic to Ginger. Other than that this sounds really good.
The lemon in the shot has anti-bacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting properties. If you don't have a juicer, or a juice bar near by, you can simply drink large amounts of lemon water. The water is good for flushing out toxins anyways. Also full of anti-bacterial and antiviral and also anti-fungal… is raw honey. The good stuff… raw honey that has never been heated. Even better if it has all the pollen, propolis, and live enzymes still intact. Take teaspoons of raw honey several times a day if you feel a cold coming on. Even better – sprinkle on a good amount of Ceylon cinnamon on top of that honey. It boosts the anti-everything properties of the honey. I swear by the honey and cinnamon trick and even my daughter (5 years old) takes a tsp full of honey/cinnamon after breakfast and after dinner, daily, as a preventative.
This is very good, I can't wait to try it out. I see that you mention using a juicer, but would just blending it up be good too?
Just made these today and they were DELICIOUS! Definitely going to keep the recipe for cold/flu season.
Natasha,
Agreed … I love them anytime! Thank you for sharing.

Love! Love! Love! Everything about this!!! Just made it and I can't say enough about it! Yummmmmm. Thank you for sharing!! Just wanted to throw in that I zest my lemons throughout the year and freeze peel. That way if I don't have a fresh lemon on hand I at least have some zest I can throw in for added flavor 🙂
Thanks again!!
I have been making a similar shot for over a year now. The difference is that I add cilantro. Yes they taste wonderfully good and the benefits can be felt almost immediately. I serve them up often – I figure why wait until you aren't feeling well. Enjoyed your blog.
Sounds great…since I do not own a juicer..is it possible to use a blender?
I never thought to add a spice like cayenne into a green juice. I will try doing that. Green juices are good for health as well as healthy skin. thanks for sharing, green shots with kick! awesome 🙂

[…] In case you haven’t heard, the flu is playing zero games this season. Every state other than Hawaii has reported widespread flu activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And, eek, you can get the flu twice in one season. Yesterday was the time to start taking extra steps to protect yourself, such as washing your hands thoroughly and often. But if you’re panicking from all this talk of germs, today is just as good a day as any to start warding off sickness from the dangerous flu or even the common cold. How many Shots does that make ?
Oh Gosh, Leonie, I don’t know, this one is from so far back and I have not made it in a long time. Next time I do I will make a mental note … or if you make it before me, please let me know 🙂
